Pros: Its a single room on campus near the northeastern subway stop. Cons: There are recovering drug addicts living in the same building one floor away from student housing. There is no air conditioning and the room will be in the high 80s and low 90s in the summer with a median of 86 degrees. There are vomit stains on the shower curtains. The walls are peeling and the rooms are not properly cleaned before you move in. There is no stair access to the room and only one elevator. There is a smoking area on the street below so smoke and weed can often be smelled when opening the window. There is no control over the heating which has turned on in the summer unnecessarily. This building was the worst dorm I’ve ever stayed in during my time at NEU as a fourth year. Do not live here during the summer, you will be hot and sweating all the time because there is no AC. There is a cockroach problem and it took maintenance almost an entire day to solve the problem and by the time they came, the roach was gone. The bathrooms were always dirty and never seemed clean. The building is extremely sketchy and as a girl I felt uncomfortable living there. Those who lived in the YMCA apartments would hang outside the building at nighttime. I had a HUGE single. I switched here from Commonwealth Dorm in spring of 2018 after I came back from NUin. I wish I wasn't in a single because I was super lonely coming back from NUin, but other than that the actual room was great. The building is a little sketchy though but the bathrooms are super clean.

There are two things that set Hastings apart from other dorms on campus: 1. Hastings is full of single rooms, which is ideal if you enjoy some privacy 2. Hastings (along with EV and Midtown) get free access to the YMCA Most of the rooms are relatively small (with few exceptions). The dorm is ideal for people who prefer to just sleep or do work in their rooms opposed be be social in their own dorm.

Hastings is a really strange building. It's connected to the YMCA, so there are separate elevators for the YMCA residents and for students. You have to take the elevator up and down; the staircase is normally blocked off. YMCA residents live on the 5th floor, so students can't access that floor. Hastings has a huge problem with mice, and from what I can tell conditions haven't improved much. The only thing you can really do is ask facilities to provide mouse traps. Long story short: Do Not Recommend. About the only good thing about this building is that all the rooms are singles.

This building has a serious problem with pest control. I saw mice on a regular basis and had to have traps in my room. Dead cockroaches were a frequent occurrence in the hallways and bathroom, though thankfully I never saw a live one. The bathroom is communal, and it wasn’t terrible but the showers seemed to never be cleaned and the heat was turned up way too high all year. The building doesn’t have AC, but the heat does work well. I was on the recently-renovated third floor, and the rooms are very small but I had no issue with that. The elevator broke down frequently, and there is no stair access. Put here as a spring admit (NUin) freshman. Very small single room on the sixth floor. Good view. I was on the "good half" of the floor: close to the smaller, cleaner, and less used bathroom, the common room, and as far away from the RA as could be. Room size wasn't problem since I was there for only two months (January-March when COVID made us leave campus), but I imagine living there for the whole year wouldn't be ideal. Building is very old and shared with the neighboring YMCA. There is no stair access to the dorms (only a single elevator that sounds like it's going to breakdown every time you use it). Old building, many rats.Thin wall. My neighbors play guitar at 3 am and I can hear in my room. Loud AC and you can not adjust the temp. Bath sometimes got blocked by hair. People throw toilet paper on the floor. Sensitive fire alarm. Only one good thing is it’s location. Very close to business school but far from science halls.
