UC Davis Sophomore Dorms Ranked

Ranking the best sophomore dorms at UC Davis, according to students.

  • Number 5

    Yosemite Hall

    based on 5 reviews

    Yosemite Hall at UC Davis

"All the dorm living situations are what you make of it and the people you get paired with. Despite submitting a roommate request, UC Davis decided not to honor it, admitting more students than rooms, and instead splitting up requested pairs and placing them into other doubles.

Regardless, the room is relatively spacious, however, lacks storage if you are in a triple because there's only one under-bed storage. You can of course change the room layout, but typically its placed with a bunk bed and a lofted bed with a desk and cabinet underneath, and closets on one wall and desks on the other. It is definitely nice compared to the other dorms offered at Davis, but it also isn't the greatest. The view of the room is just okay—because the building is placed so close to the surrounding apartments, everyone can see through into each other's rooms. Since the bathroom is placed in the room as its suite-style, the bathroom is how clean you make it. The bathroom is only cleaned once a week compared to every day like the communal bathrooms, so the cleanliness is dependent on you and your roommates/suitemates. In regards to location, it is super convenient being close to trader joes but it honestly isn't too bad of a bike ride to campus. It's only an extra 2 minutes to get onto campus, typically taking me 8 minutes to bike to the library.

    TLDR
Pro: Location & proximity to bike parking, in-suite bathroom, spacious lounges and kitchen, newer building, proximity to dining commons

Con: in-suite bathroom, bike parking, prone to blackouts/lack electricity (on different generator than the rest of campus)

"I have lived here for 2 years now and it was a good starting point as a younger college student. The rooms come fully furnished and they are newer than other buildings in Davis. We do not have to pay for electricity, internet, and other utilities because they are factored into the living cost already. For a furnished apartment, it is a standard price point. You do have to pay by the quarter instead of monthly though (payment plans available). I live in a double and have a massive room with plenty of space even though there are two full beds in there. The biggest thing that bothers me and many residents the most is the parking situation!!! You have to pay a ridiculous amount for an unassigned spot (and even more for a tandem spot, $700+) and usually all of them are full unless you want to park super far away. They will ticket your car if parked on the street during the weekdays for more than 2 hours... Their parking system is meant to catch you and leech you for all your money. Main reason why I didn't renew for next year." - 2 years ago

"Made my freshman year a lot easier! If you like socializing, this isn’t quite the dorm for you. Apartment-style minus a full kitchen. Was 8 people per suite (2 people per room) when I lived there in 2016" - 4 years ago

    Ramble at West Village

"One of the nicer places to live in Davis. Definitely better than the godforsaken, overpriced, modern-day prisons that they call the student dorms. Overall it was a good experience living here but the management are complete garbage at West Village. Still I'd take living here than living in the dorms anyday." - 4 years ago

    Alder Hall

    based on 3 reviews

"My double room is fairly big and roomy, a lot more than I had expected. My main negative is the distance from the rest of campus it is—I didn't own a bike so all my classes were at least twenty minutes of walking from my dorm.

The laundry room only has four units of washing/dryer for the entire building, so you'd have to wait a long time often to even have access to one, usually. The first floor common room has a TV and a piano that are available for anyone to use. The floor restrooms are not in the best conditions but they aren't dirty or unsanitary by any stretch of the imagination, just worn down, etc. There's a single elevator that's pretty small and slow but is right next to the laundry room." - 4 years ago
